PHP and MySQL to find the country, host, browser...

PHP can collect data about you:

• visitor's browser,
• preferred language,
• country,
• spotting webbot activity...

The information, open to the public (extracted from the HTTP protocol), is more or less reliable:

• The browser User Agent can easily be spoofed and the preferred language modified.
• Sometimes humans try to be considered as a robot, mostly Googlebot .
• Robots too do not always identify and try to look like human beings.
• The IP addresses are often redistributed, forwarded, "African Internet Numbers Registry" blocks or the Asian Pacific Region IP adresses are often imprecise or unknown, a few ISP (AOL, tele2, chello, colt...) centralize the traffic and their customers seem to come from the central point, big companies do the same...
• "Google Web Accelerator" (IP 72.14.192.xx) increases requests from the United States.
• AVG Safe Search and other "anti infected pages" let you think you have visitors whereas the pages, among the search results displayed by the main search engines, are only fetched to be examined.
• A few visitors use the Tor network, a VPN, "proxies" or translation services.
• I am sometimes localised in the Netherlands, my host is often more than 800km from home as it depends on my ISP availabilities.

However, the information is relatively accurate. I'd say between 80 and 90%.
